I strongly agree with this. Getting the huge number of academic purists on board is another matter!
This is a problem in my field. I see it a lot. We produce fantastic data from satellite sensors and just 'throw [it] over the wall' for someone else to use. Most of it never gets used. As someone who has 'jumped in' from another field to use EO data, a big effort has been finding the most appropriate repository/archive for what I wanted. I've also looked into ocean & coastal bathymetry, similar issue, finding the appropriate repositories.

Having spent 4 years doing a PhD on satellite data, yes. Having then spent 10 years working on systems to make environmental data reusable... also yes!
