Nature doesn't care what we think or feel, it just is. It doesn't think or make value judgements. Similar you can't make Brad Pitt my equal, by wishing it so or by legislating it. The differences will still exist. So Brad will just have to accept I am smarter and better looking.

I like the turn of phrase at the end, but so what? Nature also doesn’t think anyone is “smarter” or “better-looking” than anyone else, those are human concepts. Are you suggesting that someone is failing to recognize that everyone is unique, and that people have individuality?

I hope not! But if you are 6ft 10inches and I am 5ft, should we have an equal right to join the NBA?

Nope, nobody has a “right” to join the NBA. It should be a purely performance-based position.

So what about university? If you score 800 in your SATs and I score 600, should I get to go because I am from a minority group and you are white?

I’m pretty sure those sorts of policies are only applied between two candidates with the same score, so like if we both got 600s you’d go by default I think Affirmative Action is an ok idea, but an impractical band-aid that relies too much on a single criterion in practice

Not true I am afraid. In fact a case brought by Asians against an Ivy League college is before the supreme court. The differences between stats are stark upto 200 higher for asians, 100 for whites vs African Americans. I thought it was "bad" to discriminate based on race.

Well, yeah, if it was actually used to *disqualify* candidates with *better* applications, then that’s obviously bad. If it’s just an effect from just tipping the balance between equal applications, it’s like... neutral? Like I said, inefficient concept anyway.

I think it is wrong to try and right an historic injustice by punishing those who took no part in it. I also think their is more than a little racism here, against the Asian community how perform so well academically.

Great point! The question of our time. Right now everything seems stable. Yet, civilisations can go down hill quickly. My fear is not of the doomsday scenarios, but the steady decline over 10-20 years that takes us out of a golden age into a dark age. I see the signs already.

My fear is the unmitigated, unnecessary destruction of limited resources by a system not equipped to solve global, non-market-related problems
