I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

As a new assistant prof, got lost driving a jet-lagged (UK-based) job candidate back to hotel after a very late dinner, the night before her job talk. Didn’t have a smartphone. Had to pull over & call a friend at midnight & ask them to look up where I was on google maps.

The principal of scholars reviewing and evaluating each other's work is absolutely essential to science (and other fields). The way academic journals do this now is just one (very recent, highly constrained and inefficient) way to accomplish that.

It just ensures that we don’t give prizes to scientists for unreliable, incorrect work.” I want to quote the whole thing, it’s great. Just read it.

“Having good referees doesn’t ensure that great basketball is played; it just ensures that basketball players can’t win by bending or breaking the rules. Similarly, having good scientific referees doesn’t ensure that great science gets done. ->

🔥💯 “The problem isn’t that refs are bad. It’s that they’re too good. [...] for years, [NBA stars] got the most favorable treatment [...]. Now the refs are [...] no longer giving preferential treatment—leading to huge complaints from the people who have to play by fairer rules.”

Just heard Sapolsky on radio talking credulously about the Stanford Prison Experiment. Sapolsky’s at Stanford, so surely he knows about SPE’s problems*? I loved “A Primate’s Memoir” so am really bummed *Great article on SPE & Stanford’s (non-)response:

Hey Post Docs and ECRs - how do you typically find funds to travel to conferences that are outside of area of research? Asking for a friend who wants to go to but lives on the other side of the world

I appreciate this behind-the-scenes look at a tough decision. I’d like to see more transparency from and other societies about policies & plans. E,g., What steps were taken towards open access in the 2019 APS contract negotiations with SAGE?

... anyone who says registered reports slow you down should try one. That's true of some parts of the process, but it is very much the opposite of true for others

I find it interesting how often we equate "expertise" with "ability to get an effect" (or get a larger effect) - especially, though not only, in the context of replications. What about expertise in designing good controls, blinding, minimizing confounds and biases, etc?
