Lab data: CPU is not idle for over 20 seconds. Field data: The vast majority of visitors experience almost no input delay. I’m not sure how to interpret this…

Last month, one of my apps temporarily vanished from the App Store for some pretty silly reasons. 🤔 Silver lining: The experience reminded me why I ❤️ the web! 🙌

You don’t have to open the main pane to use the Eyedropper. If you put the "Developer" button in your toolbar, it‘s two clicks away.

How about the term “site domain” for domains that define websites, like and ?

On Cloudflare, when you try to change your payment method, if there’s an error, the site shows a *temporary* error message at the bottom of the screen. If you switch to a different tab while it’s processing, you may completely miss this error message. …What a usability fail 😞

I was working on some `:visited` styles, and couldn’t figure out why the alpha of my `hsla()` was being ignored. I moved it to `opacity` and it still was ignored… but Firefox reminded me WHY it was being ignored. Thank you, Firefox! I had somehow forgotten about those limits.

A screenshot of the Firefox Web Inspector. Next to a grayed-out `opacity: 0.1;` is a lowercase 'i' in a circle. Above that, a popup says: “It’s impossible to override opacity due to :visited restriction.” This is followed by a “Learn more” hyperlink.

Imagine if you could just type in the address bar, and it would redirect to the most relevant CSS spec and section. Could make this happen? Right now, I usually go and then scroll to the Specifications section on MDN.

“Chrome is the only browser that supports cookie priority.” Old feature that I either forgot about or never heard of.

And if you’re looking at this screenshot and thinking, “It’s not that bad,” remember that not everyone has an expensive high-pixel-density screen, good lighting conditions, good eye sight, etc.

🤓 Some websites think font-weight: 300 makes them more elegant, but in reality they’re just less readable.

First Byte Time of almost 2 seconds is still considered an A? That’s news to me.

“The year is 2021. It is no longer safe to transmit information. Phones, computers, and satellites are all vulnerable. … Those who control the information control the world.” Not bad for a film from 1995.

The content comes into view after clicking the “Hide Fixed Elements” button… The tragicomic thing is that this website could have easily put all these fixed elements in the whitespace area on the right. That would have been much better for both the site and the visitor.

Try using on Firefox/Safari: perfectly usable. Try it on Chrome: even better. So my reply would be: yes, PE makes sense even with experimental APIs.

Compared to the default, fit-content does not seem to affect the layout, at least not in this very simple case. In other words, with or without fit-content, the text is laid out the same.

Looking at the source (StatCounter’s data), notice how Safari 5.1’s share fluctuates: 0.02% in January vs. 0.8% in June. That’s an increase by a factor of 40.
