Can't remember the anthology's name, but the call was magical shop stories to populate a district in a fantasy city. Wrote from scratch. Rejected. After filing names off and revising the ending, sold the story to four years later.

First thing i had published was in Lune: the journal of literary misrule, who wanted stories/poems/essays on the theme of Dislocation.

I've had varying success on this. I wrote this for Apex Magazine's "Upside Down" antho, but it was sadly not chosen

My first pro sale was to initially for their Coulrophobia call. I didn't get in there, but when they did their remix, I queried and got in!

  7. Clarification: call refers too specific themed call. Also, totally okay to comment if you've subbed to a themed call and haven't had it accepted. We share all the knowledge!

“Jewel of the Vashwa” was originally written for “Song & Sonnet” in FOUR WHOLE DAYS!!! It did not make it in but then I heard about the Apex Zodiac thème & spent 5 days revising to fit. Anyway...

I rarely write to calls, just submitting to themes if I happen to have something relevant. But I wrote a 5k story specifically for the SciFutures "City of the Future" anthology and sold it to them for $500, so that was nice. Later it won an award!

There was a call for stories inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. I love that painting and spent probably a month staring at it until I got my story idea. A furious, emotional week of first drafting, followed by 2 weeks of revision.

The first story I ever had published was written for a call for "spring festival" stories in the late, great . Spent 2 weeks coming up with the idea for the call, a couple of (intense) days first-drafting, and another 3-4 days polishing.

  13. Curious! Have you ever written a short story for a call and had it accepted from the slush pile? (ie you were not solicited). If yes, and you want to share, how long did you take to write it and did you write it from scratch for that call? Post links if you like, I'll boost!
