@signalapp Any chance public groups (or join via link) capability is on the way? Also, is the ability to view chat history for new people joining a group in the roadmap?

Security doesn't seem to preclude having history. Basically, if there's a "join via link" or public group option, it's helpful to offer people many joining, some history, because otherwise they join a seemingly empty group with no content. There's not even a welcome message.

Signal may correct me, but I believe Signal’s Encryption Protocol implements Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS), which by design prevents past encrypted messages in a conversation thread from being retrieved and decrypted. Each message has a new key which can’t decrypt past messages.
-
So, users would have to resend old messages anew. Interesting...
-
Yes, because the purpose of PFS is to prohibit a third party who surreptitiously obtains a key to a private conversation thread from going back & decrypting all the past messages exchanged between the participants. A new participant to a thread thus can decrypt only new messages.
-
Right, makes sense. So, if there were a public group feature, it would be that, public. All the messages within would be public. Which, and it makes perfect sense, isn't the type of thing Signal is designed or branded for.
-
Yes, and Telegram is very popular for supporting public channels which are not end-to-end encrypted, and which therefore allow new users to a public channel to go back and read previous messages exchanged in the channel.
-
I've used them. Great feature set. Home brew cryptography though, not that you'd need it for groups.
