Yeah the only problem is that this was a completely new phone with a stock OS, and nothing was modified at all. Strangest instance of a bug I've ever seen. Idk why it's doing that.

It's possible that other manufacturers were affected by an OS-level bug similar to the one that hit some CyanogenMod/Lineage users, but we haven't received any other reports. The crash is probably unrelated if their phone was working for a few days after installing Signal.

The user reported that as soon as the app was uninstalled, the issues subsided. Any idea on what could be causing that?

We would need a debug log or more information in order to continue troubleshooting, but it shouldn't be possible for any Android application to affect the host OS like this. We still haven't heard of similar behavior from any other users.

My best guess is that it was probably a faulty phone from the manufacturer, or at worst case scenario, a malicious actor. Who knows, I am still at a loss for explanation.

A side note that I may have forgot to mention: The user in question had already returned the phone so there's no way to see what happened, but I will still keep you guys updated with any issues I run into. Thanks for your hard work and keep up the progress!
