@whispersystems i just updated and i can no longer add new notification sounds to my contacts. Used to crash Signal but then the new tone was in the list. Option to add has disappeared entirely. I'm a Beta tester. Would love to automatically load custom sounds by filename!
We replaced our custom ringtone picker with the system intent that is built into Android. If you add the sound(s) to the Ringtone folder on your phone, you should be able to use them in Signal.

Nope that doesn't work, i put an .m4a file in Ringtones and neither the system notifications dialog nor Signal sees it. Please restore the option to add custom notification sounds!

Even though it would crash Signal, the ringtone would get added to the list and then could be used.

Adding custom notification sounds should still be possible on your phone, but that may depend on the manufacturer and OS version (stock Android versus TouchWiz, for example).
-
and it's not, so can you please bring back the option to do it from Signal?
-
As of Android N we can no longer offer external ringtone selection from within Signal. Signal is now using a recent targetSdk version and this is an Android restriction. We also don't want Signal to crash. Sorry about the inconvenience.

if my phone is rooted can you tell me how to splice custom ringtones into Signal's database? I want to have custom ringtones for everyone I know and I don't want to make all those changes manually. 100% serious. please help.
