I stoped taking app developer serious, when they don't publish it over f-droid. ...just sayn
They're very serious, and they depend on functionality of Google play services. This means f-Droid can't provide the necessary dependencies
...and we all know that there are free federated standarts such as #xmpp that comes with e2e OMEMO encryption and covering metadata through simple tor integration in the app such as:
ttps://conversations.im
pm: I'm not a dev, just a user.
They don't use Google for the protocol? They use Google for their servers so you can actually send your messages and there's no comparable feature F-droid provides.
GCM is used solely for the default Android push notifications, and those are simple wakeup events that do not include any encrypted message content or additional metadata whatsoever. Non-Play users receive push events via a WebSocket and they can still send and receive messages.
