Is this an option that can be turned off? I like the absence of read receipts currently.

        So they're off-by-default then?

For existing installations, yes. This feature is something that new users expect, and we made it easy to enable/disable at any time.

It should be opt-in for new users as well, in my opinion

Would love to see the absence of using phone numbers. Good for families with kids who need texting but don’t want lines

Seriously, on by default for new users when this could be a privacy concern? Users should be given a prompt to choose. Defaults matter.

Prompts suck, though I agree Signal following what users/other messengers are doing over privacy concerns strays far from its goals.

Am also perfectly fine with off by default with a setting to turn it on. 😛

Settings suck, just dont have it - other messengers may have it, but dont compete on what they have, compete on what you're good at

I love Signal, but this should surely be off by default for privacy. Personally, read receipts are obnoxious and glad Signal lacked them.

A privacy focussed messenger that implements a privacy invading feature and turns it on by default? That doesn't make sense.
