The story isn't about Signal or WhatsApp, but to the extent that it is, we see it as confirmation that what we're doing is working.

Ubiquitous e2e encryption is pushing intelligence agencies from undetectable mass surveillance to expensive, high-risk, targeted attacks.
-
Extremely well-written statement, thank you.

What is Whisper Systems?
-
They're responsible for the open source encrypted messenger app Signal, which is also the basis for the end to end encryption in WhatsApp.
-
Thank you. I didn't realise.

You miss the point they have compromised the underlying operating system that your application runs on. They copy before you

you do force us to store a list of all our contacts in the phone’s address book to use your app, however.

If only requires warrant + targeted malware, undercuts LE arg that can't monitor encrypted phones

Which is a very good point that seems to get glossed over when governments seek to control encryption.

I already had to explain that and e2e encryption to someone who claimed signal was not safe.
-
Yes it is, but android and ios have been zero dayed by the cia. They copy before the app sends on both ends.
-
As far as I understand these zero day exploits are not suitable for mass surveillance -> Signal succeeds?
-
They were working on that too. Had a whole department unifying work of others.
-
it's not as easy as you may think
-
Never said easy. However, it is not impossible or they would not be trying. Exploitable Information is pursued.
