Are there apps that encrypt your text messages that DON'T automatically send messages to all of your contacts?
No msg is sent, notifications are locally generated by the Signal app of the user who has you in their contacts

Signal is designed to be as simple as normal comms, so if someone can contact you by phone they can by Signal.
-
I'm getting a lot of "___ is on Signal, say hey!" messages. At very least this is noisy/annoying
-
but I've also spoken to at least one person who received that message (I guess you're telling me it's
-
not a "message"? Ok?) from someone she has cut contact with bc she happened to be in his contacts
-
One only receives this notification for ppl in one's own contacts. Doesn't come "from" a user w/ you in theirs.
-
but what you're saying is that I have no control over who is notified.
-
And you are suggesting they contact me when I may have no desire for them to.
-
Yes, anyone who has your contact info will be able to contact you over Signal, just like SMS/Phone.

apart from semantics, how's that any different? Why should joining notify everyone with your number?
-
I've had same # for 10 years, my contacts port and are a mess. Don't want to bother all those people.
-
I believe it's that you'll be bothered by them joining and they will be if they have you in contacts
