    c) If you won't allow remote work & don't react well to real world events affecting your staff being in your office 9-5,M-F, then good luck with your permanently young workforce. (Yes, others in that team left soon after I did)

    b) There's NO Skills Crisis for high-end IT staff in any IT based Industry (including Cloud Operations) in areas outside Sydney (I don't believe there's one in Sydney either). The "Skills Crisis" is a game played by Industry to keep wages low, that's all.

Some observations: a) Agesim is very real. Australia's Universities & IT Industry are running a scam where to get an undergrad degree you need to do 6 months of your 3 year degree "on placement"/work-experience/"Intership". This allows employers to cycle through free young staff.

That was enough for the team's manager to say "You've got 3 weeks to decide whether you want to stay here or not." Hint: Don't word things like that to your new mature-age staff. Of course I resigned within a week, as they would not allow any remote work or deviation from 9-5,M-F

In that time I found a job that was a partial fit for my skill set (Windows Support) & I started there after 3 months of constant job hunting. 4 months into it one of my sons had issues at school which meant I took a few long lunches & left work early a few days in a month 3/n

Anyway, I applied for over 40 jobs here, most a good fit on paper (DevOps is rare here, is a "branch office" city). I got 6 Interviews & 3 rejection emails from those ~40 applications (all the rest never responded) but interviews didn't start coming in for months. 2/n

A thread/rant re: IT skills crisis & retaining deep-technical staff: A year ago I started looking for a job here in Being a cloud devops (on the Ops side) specialist, I knew that there's a small pool of roles available here. 1/n

The government is urging us not to use aircon and major appliances. But, since we make up less than 1.3% of demand my household is powerless to stop grid overload. Sorry that's , deal with it.

I studied Permaculture in my 20s, it changed how I view the world & as a technologist it has large scale applications like the kelp forests of this movie. Another is this idea re: bamboo & kelp at scale in the South Pacific

This is what an “Price Spike” looks like! I’d be paying that if I wasn’t running from our home battery (but the battery will be flat in hours at this rate).

Don’t fall for it. The dangerous bastard will use the bushfires to give himself more powers, powers which will be used to intimidate peaceful protestors rather than to help with natural disasters. This man cannot be trusted.

The Myth of Job Hopping & a dig at the eternal bullshit of "Skills Crisis" (which is a sop to keep wages low): "The abundance of talent in the industry means there’s always someone to step in and take the company further"

If only the NICs had competition for their wares (AS numbers & IP Addresses), then I'm sure they'd have more reliable online payment systems. Another few hours of my life lost in "NIC bullshit" to pay an invoice. Yes, this year its just an Internet Tax.

This is good. I see so many workplaces where a Daily Standup is really just a Manager getting Staff Progress Updates. Go for the Good, dispense with the Bad & Ugly Standups.

Every year paying Internet NIC invoices is a lottery in credit card denial/payment problems. This year is no different. Sometimes the core of the Internet Business Model can't itself Internet.
