Pretty cool research! Cement production makes up 8% of global CO2 emissions. It'd be so exciting to see biomineralization + make concrete production a zero-carbon process

I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

This is extremely disappointing and antithetical to the spirit of the American Dream

Climate change is an existential threat that is affecting everyone, everywhere. My thoughts are with the people of Australia as they battle catastrophic wildfires that have already claimed at least 25 lives. Here are ways you can help.

Our preprint on NanoporeTERs, a new class of multiplexable protein reporters that use arrays for readout directly at the protein level, is now out at great work by @Nicolas76190695 and team

We're at a tipping point in the fight against climate change. I'm proud that Canada is one the first countries to institute a comprehensive . Today we get to decide whether we take greater steps forward as a leader in this fight, or regress to complacency.

2 weeks ago, I mailed in my overseas elector's ballot for - the first federal election that allows longtime 🇨🇦 expats to vote since 2007, when Harper's Conservative gov prohibited voting by Canadians who have lived abroad for > 5 yrs.

I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as President. He's a hard-working, effective leader who takes on big issues like climate change. The world needs his progressive leadership now, and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term.

One of our favorite papers on the importance of scientific thinking and skepticism is Carl Sagan's "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection." Carl discusses many examples of misinformation, and “baloney”, and how to spot/evaluate them. Read here:

A cheap & high-throughput method for assessing E.coli subspecies diversity in the human . Probing the landscape of drug-resistant E.coli in gut/bladder could improve understanding of how such superbugs spread and how to effectively fight them.

Human-driven climate change will disrupt global food chains within decades, a new UN report warns. 821M people worldwide are food insecure, and "the cycle is accelerating." The solution: cut CO2 emissions, unsustainable farming, deforestation + food waste. Now.

Instead of a 10 year push like Apollo, this will be a multi-decades endeavour. We can't turn this around without a societal shift to a more altruistic and sustainable mindset. The upside? We don't all have to be rocket scientists to make a difference.

With climate change, it's not enough to just feel inspired by the daunting scale of the challenges ahead. We all have to chip in and make some sacrifices: drive less, eat less meat, recycle more, pay more for gas etc.

The financial impacts the Apollo Program had on the livelihoods of average Americans were negligible. You didn't have to change anything in your life just because NASA was shooting for the moon.

"The moonshot technology we need is political will." A crucial difference btw then & now is that the burden of combating climate change lies with ALL of us.
