Asked whether Keir Starmer disagrees with No 10 scrapping daily briefings, spokesperson says: "The government has taken its decision and we understand the rationale behind it." Adds that there should be "a mechanism to allow the public to hear from scientists".

Asked whether KS agrees with Usdaw urging retailers to stick to 2m rule, spox says it has changed to "one metre plus", not strictly 2m, adding that different organisations will adapt in various ways and "retailers should listen to the advice of Usdaw".

Asked whether KS backs calls by MPs and council for local authority debt to be cancelled, spox says: "The priority at the moment has to be how can councils make sure they have the funding they need to get through the financial year."

On 2030 net-zero target, KS spox says: "The last manifesto made a number of really important commitments on this, which Keir supported, but we lost the election." Adds "next target will be written in 4-5 years' time and we’ll have to deal with circumstances that we’re in then".

Asked whether Labour is worried about Rishi Sunak adopting the 'green industrial revolution' framing, Starmer's spox says: "If Rishi Sunak wants to adopt policy from the last Labour manifesto, we would support that."

On the review, KS spokesperson adds: "It’s a very comprehensive report... All those recommendations will be taken very, very seriously by the new leadership and the new general secretary when he starts in a couple of weeks' time."

On what KS will be looking forward to, spox said: "I’m sure Keir will be looking forward to a pint in his local pub, The Pineapple in Kentish Town." Lack of five-a-side football "has been a source of deep frustration", and he wants to work with PM on how to bring it back.

Just to be clear, the last manifesto did NOT commit to net zero by 2030. Here's the relevant extract, which, if you accept that #ClimateEmergency is an existential crisis, could hardly have been more reasonable:-pic.twitter.com/ebQTcGPGgN

Starmer seems intent on only providing mild constructive advice and 'nudges' from the sidelines for the next 4-5 yrs - he should be, at the very least, building consensus around important issues and targets like these.

I don’t think he knows how. And he seems content to let a b-team from 2001 dictate a strategy based on what would’ve been good triangulation in 1996
