Labour NEC meeting is being held right now to determine who will be on the panel of the independent investigation into Labour's leaked report on its handling of antisemitism complaints.

Two sources say Jon Lansman proposed Alf Dubs because there was no Jewish representation on the panel - but that this was voted down, including by Keir Starmer.

I'm told the stated reason for rejecting Dubs as a panel member was that he vocally supported Keir Starmer's leadership bid. But Baroness Wilcox also backed his campaign:https://twitter.com/TheLadyWilcox/status/1238841872866521092 …

Keir Starmer is standing to be leader of the Labour Party, and I'm with him: https://twitter.com/Keir_Starmer/status/1213536222783688704?s=20 …

The other factor was gender balance, particularly as the chair is a man. But there are concerns about the lack of Jewish representation on the panel.

Obviously Dubs was more vocal as a supporter than Wilcox – naturally, because he's a higher profile figure – and he has worked with Starmer before on projects, they are close allies.

Labour spokesperson: "The NEC has appointed Martin Forde to chair the independent investigation into the circumstances, contents and release of an internal report. Forde will be supported by a panel of three experts who have expertise in the law & the Labour Party’s structures."

The vote on the proposal to include Alf Dubs was lost 16-18, an NEC source tells me, and there was a request in the meeting for it to voted on again after it was argued that Wilcox had vocally supported Keir Starmer and Rosena Allin-Khan.

An NEC member wanting to stay anonymous said: “There is no excuse for appointing Debbie Wilcox to the panel but not Alf Dubs. This reeks of a stitch up. Keir and Angela refused to share names of panel members in advance of the meeting so they could railroad the decision."

Another NEC member goes public with view that the panel cannot remain as it is:https://twitter.com/jonlansman/status/1256247854190022656 …

I'm deeply disappointed to learn that Baroness Debbie Wilcox, former leader of Newport City Council, has tweeted clearly factional support for anti-Corbyn statements by Iain McNicol & others, & for Labour First & Progress. She's therefore clearly unsuitable for the Inquiry panel
