Since it's the new year, I'm going to plug the econ/econ history paper reading group I've been running with some friends again! We typically meet on weekends in San Francisco. Please DM me if you might be interested in joining!

Three Gorges Dam goes against many common stereotypes about Chinese infrastructure projects. It took over 40 years to start construction, it took in lots of local input, and it involved paying for relocation of people displaced by the project. (Spence, Search for Modern China)

I would guess that multi-car elevateds and subways reduced costs, so maybe after those came around the street pictures should have less pedestrians? Though the ratio of driver wages to capital costs were probably much lower then so maybe labor cost wasn't the limiting factor

Do turn-of-the-century pictures like this have so many pedestrians because streetcar fares were too expensive for most people?

    - The big buildings on arterials part is useless because it has a 50% IZ

I like the simplicity of this bill. But: - The fourplex part is useless because it gives no FAR/lot coverage relief - The small apartments in multifamily zones part is useless because no one will tear down a 2-story dingbat to build a 3-story dingbat

Over 1000 people liked this tweet. How many of them are YIMBY Action or Peninsula for Everyone members, or called Sen. Hill about SB50, or will vote for Shelley Masur in the SD13 primary in March? The apathy in tech can be so frustrating sometimes...

Love too get ratioed by residents of the only US city with rising bus ridership and >10 units of housing per 1000 people permitted per year telling me that their city is not making climate progress

I can barely understand what this means but somehow I feel like it's a good thing that there are homeowners out there that get turned on by this stuff

There's an inherent trade-off between local control and state-mandated affordability through a density bonus program, and they could have thrown their weight behind the latter but instead they asked for more local control, which ended up hurting their cause

Like, if you have the local rezoning plan as in the latest amendments, the state can't at the same time come up with this very specific IZ criteria and require every city to adopt it verbatim as part of their rezoning. And it would probably violate AB1515 anyway

I feel like ACT has played their hand here with SB50? The bill can either be a required local rezoning, or a state density bonus program with state-controlled IZ levels, but probably not both.

. What are the chances that HCD might adopt the feasibility requirements for RHNA sites as described in and ? Or do you think more legislation would be needed to make this a requirement?
