Siddharth Singh’s posts

10 years ago today I posted a silly and nerdy tweet on how diamonds are just carbon allotropes and then said marry me — to no one in particular. A random stranger responded to that saying it depends on the size of the carbon allotrope. We’ve been married for five years now.

Real sentence said by someone living in a neighbourhood where each house is worth at least ₹6-7 crore: “The woman who takes our garbage every day has now demanded ₹200 per month. We recently had a society meeting and decided we won’t increase it from the current ₹150.”

My friend Seby, all of 18, has started his first ever bakery. Today’s the first day. He makes some delicious muffins, croissants, brownies, breads and more. Support him if you’re in Goa. His bakery, ‘The Rolling Pin’ is at The Mango Grove on Candolim Beach road.

Microsoft has had its share of sins, but can we take a moment to appreciate how it never sold our data for money, never bombarded us with advertisements in their core products, didn't try to sell us wheels for $700, and mostly didn't force obsolescence on its products?

I did not know this. In air conditioners, a "ton" refers to the heat needed to melt a ton of ice over one day. So a 1.5 ton AC removes heat that can melt 1.5 tons of ice in a day.

Even after 4 months of having my debit card, I couldn’t remember the CVV/code. I could have sworn it kept changing, but even the idea of that is absurd. I thought I was losing it. And then I took photos of the CVV a few hours apart. This is some truly futuristic technology.

It’s a hard time for the rest of us from other schools in Hyderabad. First the CEO of Adobe, then the CEO of Microsoft, and now the next World Bank president are all from HPS. And all they ever did was sit in the wall of the Begumpet airport and watch planes fly out.

Science isn’t decided by debate, where theatrics matter more than substance. Do clinical trials with placebos and treatment groups, publish data on a reputed platform, show evidence, get double blind peer reviewed — do everything that all other proven medicines go through.

A lot of people are bothered by CamScanner getting banned. Easy (and arguably better) replacements: DropBox and OneDrive. Both have excellent scanners built in and the scanned docs are immediately available on all your devices.

It doesn’t take much to be rude to the bank employee who calls you to sell you a card, even though they’re doing what they’ve been told to do. But if you ever met the CEO of that same bank — the one who makes them call you — you’d probably be very polite. That’s how class works.

Trivia: Bangladesh's flag is slightly off centre (notice the red circle is just marginally to the left) so that when it is on a pole and fluttering about, the movement happens on the right, and then the red circle appears to be in the stable part of the flag. 🇧🇩

This Pakistani journo entering grave of Abdul Sattar Edhi and this Indian journo entering a bathtub to illustrate Sridevi's death are great metaphors for the state of the media in the two countries.

In that case, the sale of garlic and onion should also be banned and so should Licious, Meatigo and other home delivery companies. Unless the idea is only to harass small meat shop owners.

During Navratri, 99% of households in Delhi don't even use garlic & onion, so we've decided that no meat shops will be open in South MCD; the decision will be implemented from tomorrow. Fine will be imposed on violators: Mukkesh Suryaan, Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation

The fact that 44 per cent (323) of all the districts in the country now have test positivity rates below the WHO-mandated limit of 5 per cent is encouraging. The worry is that 56 per cent (411) of the districts still have TPR above 5 per cent. @IndiaToday Data Intel Unit (DIU).

Far too many people in India are just meeting each other with symptoms of cold and cough, saying things like, "I'm coughing because I had cold water 2 days ago" or "I got wet in the rain". That's not how infections work. If you have symptoms of anything, stay away from others.

Khan Market is named after Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan (brother of Gaffar Khan). It is named after him because at the time of partition he safely brought immigrants from what is now Pakistan to the area that is now Khan Market. People who still live there will tell you their history.

More airports should do this. The conveyor belt for the checked in luggage is at the floor level itself. No need to pick the luggage up. Useful especially for the elderly and others who may not be able to lift easily.

One year into the pandemic, we’re still focusing too much on touch and too little on enclosed spaces. Fine if establishments insist on sanitising everyone’s hands on entry — but the focus should be on turning off the ACs and opening the windows (where possible).

Back in Vizag after 2 decades and I’m still in love with the city. Vizag has it all: clean water, roads and air, open public spaces, beautiful beaches and hills, sailing, an ideal port. With a little push on tourism and commerce, Vizag can easily be India’s Cape Town.
