Not sure who first decided to model design as a linear process (research-design-test-build) but it's created an expectation among stakeholders that this is how it's supposed to go - each step must be done Exactly Once and if you have to loop back, you messed up.

Here's an exercise - what product responsibilities in an early stage startup can a product manager own that are not better owned by one of:
1. Founders
2. Designers
3. Project managers
4. Engineers
I've never been able to come up with a meaningful list. Help me with this?

It's also why I believe most early stage startups don't need, and shouldn't hire, product managers. They can't fix the problems magically because your need to hire them is a symptom. (the same patent holds for QA also)
