Just renewed my really rather overdue membership, for much the same reasons.

There was no Marr Show the day after that last London Bridge attack in 2017 (BBC News at 9, Pentecost service at 10.15 instead). The week after that, Marr Show was back on, but the PM didn't feature. (Corbyn, Fallon, Heseltine, Dutch pol Sophia in 't Veld).

To carve out a space for doubt, guilt, and transgression while also holding on to hope and change - at this political moment - is quite something. The writing matches the thinking. Both repay careful attention.

Perhaps James Cleverly wouldn't have been empty chaired if he had just ignored & left the Talkradio tower. Seems the common sense thing to have done...

This is what leadership looks like. This is what statesmanship looks like. This is what a mature politics looks like. Let's have more of this.

Genuinely quite shocked by Boris Johnson describing as 'humbug' Paula Sheriff's complaint about his language in which she talked about Jo Cox and said that she and other colleagues had received death threats. I've transcribed what happened:

If Grant Schapps had taken Michael Gove's approach in his statement on Operation Matterhorn, I would genuinely doubt that a single plane was flying. There's no detail in Gove here.

It's 2h since the Supreme Court judgement. I've seen statements from leaders of all parliamentary opposition parties & groupings, as well as the Speaker of the Commons & Lord Speaker of the Lords. Have I missed one from the govt? Absence a bit astonishing.

Imagine this. It's Oct14. Govt tries to move the end date of prorogation to 1Nov. This is, AFAICT, something they can try. 1. Is the Queen likely to accept? 2. If yes, is legal challenge/remedy likely to happen in time to stop it?

An excellent point. Possibly also the only time in history where we can refer to 'a gnother GNU' and get away with it.

I do not. We have far less room to manoeuvre this time round. Interest rates are already low, govt spending is already cut by a lot, and govt debt is already high. Recession would really hurt, especially those already on the edge. We should not be choosing to have one./end

We still haven't recovered from the financial crash. We are maybe just getting there (but not everybody). It's been a sucky decade for a lot of people. Key parts of our society (eg justice) are running on fumes as a result of large cuts. Do you want to repeat that experience?/2

A crash-out Brexit will (probably) cause a recession, and (probably) shrink our economy by ~9%. People will be scared, angry, and will blame the govt for letting it happen. That's what happened in the aftermath of the financial crash, which did the same things to our economy./1

See the caption ‘Brexit - the decline of the UK’. It’s how the rest of the world now sees us. Johnson adds to it

If Johnson isn't going to turn up at the debates, they shouldn't just empty chair him, they should give that empty chair equal time. And then fill that time with character references from those who knew him best. Max Hastings, to start with.

The small crowd sighs. The litany has been completed. "Public vote! Public vote!" they chant, throats parched. Hope rises. There is a short pause, while the designated Anonymous Spokesman shuffles to the lectern to deliver the Clarification of Earlier Remarks.

Somewhere in the far future, on a sunbaked plain in an inhospitable land, a speaker is finishing his peroration: '...and so our preference, as it always has been, is for a General Election, or a vote on a Labour deal, or failing that, then supporting the option of a public vote.'
