Rule of thumb: assume every stranger you encounter has an invisible disability, a private inconsolable grief, or are in the midst of an undetectable crisis.

Don’t allow projective envy to fool you into thinking you are the only or the most vulnerable person you will encounter in your day.

I listen to people’s sorrows and secrets every day - and every one is broken - especially the people you imagine are not.

Everyone is fighting so hard, for justice for their lives, for their futures, for each other. We have to be careful and thoughtful and offer each other respite.

We are all so activated - in fight or flight mode, exhausted by our own fear and adrenaline

We will all take shots we should not. We can always stop and pull back. And breathe. And offer up some human understanding.

I’ve had an invisible cancer for a year. I’ve watched clients suffering unfathomable bereavement and traumas. I’ve seen strangers assume “bad manners” or “selfishness”

We get so caught up in our own wounds we can become grandiose about our pain. We are each one among a million suffering souls.

And we won’t always read the moment correctly. We are in a long unfolding national and planetary crisis. Anyone may be vulnerable.

What gets me is even when I was in the midst of a crisis, the people I worked for took out their own personal problems on me, almost like, well she's vulnerable, so let's scapegoat her. It was disgusting.

My mother told me the chickens on the farm used to wear red lenses glasses - because if they didn’t they would peck a bleeding member of the flock to death.
