Why can't we have a Large Hadron Collider for linguistics too? We might discover some new particles. Something to think about, .

  4. There are three-year 65% funded positions available for doing a PhD in interdisciplinary Cognitive Science topics. If anyone wants to do a purely modeling project (using machine learning in psycholx, for example), please send me your proposal. I will stop looking on 15 Feb 2020.

  5. There is a range of dependent measures, or There are a range of dependent measures? I like the latter more even though it's ungrammatical, but I know you will not approve.

  6. Purely on a linguistic note, never heard two accusative marked direct objects being used where only one is allowed. Rough paraphrase: "the country's traitors-accusative, shoot the swear_word-accusative".

  7. Here's the announcement. It might be livestreamed (not sure).

  10. Someone came up with a hilarious post-hoc explanation for why there are so many Indian CEOs. As a bona fide Indian, I can assure you these claims about the great qualities of Indians are total BS. But read it and have a laugh.

  11. Coursera courses could be seen as a superficial starter kit. You can get a feel for the area, but depth will only come with working closely with a real expert. I got much more out of the online courses for the MSc in Sheffield, mainly because of the individualized feedback. 5/n

  12. After doing this course (and a few others on Coursera) I have realized that nothing will ever replace in-class instruction. There is no way to get depth of understanding without talking to an expert. 4/n

  13. Andrew Ng's handwriting is terrible and he shouldn't even try to write his examples by hand. Just use incremental reveal or something in Beamer. I found the video lectures insufficient; I would have preferred lecture notes (in addition). 3/n

  14. It is far from obvious how to reinitialize an assignment if one wants to start over. One would think an AI company could do better than asking you to make a copy and then go through an elaborate point and click dance. 2/n

  15. The best thing about this course are the programming assignments. However, the instructions are not super clear, and there is apparently an FAQ but it's hidden inside the forums as a response, and one has to go looking for it. 1/n

  20. Very counterintuitive claim: “speakers' grammar simply does not prescribe a verb number following a disjunctive subject”. So subjects don’t choke at “ the fireman or the mayor are ...”
