Many years ago a friend & I were comparing "scary hellcode" stories. He once inherited hundreds of pages of assembly language, all spaghetti, no logic to it, author purged from org long ago. It had just one comment, about 2/3 in: "tricky tricky" I bought the drinks that night.

I am reminded of the soviet-era mainframe that we dismantled and found about 50 ft of wire coiled up. On further tracing, yes it was connected. Our best guess based other old beasts was that it was acting like a mercury delay switch to control circuit timing.

I have one of these. It took a huge amount of trial & error to get right. I left the failed efforts as comments to show the path to enlightenment & act as maps of what to avoid & why... & I documented the final code - but there are still siren songs that sound like things to fix.

FWIW, back in the '80s I wrote a recursive APL function that called a second recursive function that called the first recursive function, that… (“turtles all the way down,” as the saying goes) …and it WORKED! So, yeah— I totally get the “…and now only God knows” comment, LOL
