I feel like my version of this is don’t trust anything (humans and machines alike) until you have a genuine understanding of their optimization functions

The protocol of TCP-IP and networking in general says, "Trust someone when you are trusted, and re-trusted." Cold start needs some seeds of trust anyway. Optimization gets better because two cognitive minds are better than one.
