In this May issue of , I write about what we—as Muslims—are told to not discuss: caste. And yet it is there in celebrated Muslim writing, conspicuous yet overlooked. Is there something about secularism that makes us forget caste? #Longreads

I was reporting in Bidar when police, in uniform, turned up at the school five times to question young students.

This is the small room in Shaheen School in Bidar where students were taken to for questioning for the fourth (yes, fourth) time by police in plainclothes. I was in the school when police asked students where they practiced, who taught them dialogues, why was a flag used. (1/n)

The process is the punishment: If the largest 'democracy' in the world can jail its students for protesting against it and then deny them any due process for a 1000 days, is it truly a democracy? Protest today at 3:30, Oxford:

As someone who has seen Visvak edit the densest of academic texts to draw out the most precise and impactful version of them (not to mention that the guy is simply beautiful with words), I cannot recommend his editing enough. Hire him!

Very important thread on Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians having a rightful claim over the SC status, and how some influential Ambedkarites arguing otherwise ultimately leads to furthering RW and Brahminic agendas.

Some people sent me a piece which argues Dalit Muslims and Christians don't have a claim on SC status bcz Constituent Assembly debates didn't discuss it (Arvind Kumar). Such is the dearth of scholarship on DMs and DCs that a few facts can be moulded based on ideological positions

Thank you Shireen for writing this. The evidence actually tells us that Dalit Muslims have been have been marginalized all along and there was no one to represent them in the constituent assembly.

Very important thread. Please read! Dalit as a category in India is a transreligious phenomenon, and reservations need to reflect this reality.

i also wonder what the proliferation of such pieces have to do with the fact that Supreme Court is hearing the case in July. The likes of Faiyaz Ahmed Faizie have been writing garbage for the BJP for a while anyway. They want to use the word Pasmanda but deny art 341. An Art form

actually i want to revise this a bit - there is ENOUGH scholarship to understand the Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians suffer immensely. in fact, Dalit Christians are widely studied. Anyone who wants to use words to deny them recognition has to try very hard, but they do

Extremely Important thread to understand--along with the universal moral basis for the claims of justice-- insidious expressions of hindutva hegemony among non-hindutva intellectuals.
