Initial reaction: this is crazy. After thinking about it more: I've used some of the IRS's software, and whoever created it should be banned from the sw industry. So maybe this is prudent. Tax preparation companies spend a lot of money on lobbying to keep their industry alive and the tax code complicated. It's a great example of free market forces producing an inferior service.

Is the problem with the free market, or with lobbying/campaign contributions/etc? Companies respond to incentives, and if political lobbying works it's rational for them to use it. =\

It's one and the same, right? The companies are allowed to lobby in a free market, and we don't elect enough people willing to deny their efforts.
