Once I divide the number of deaths by the corresponding distance, I get the likelihood of dying per km for the three road users. A cyclist is "40 times more likely" to die compared to a car occupant, and 2 times more likely than a motorcycle rider, for the same kms travelled.

Recently in #Bengaluru several old trees were cut to widen Bellary Road. There's another tender out rn to build a flyover over Bashyam Circle on Sankey Tank Road, where many more trees will be cut.

Road safety rallies were taken out in most cities focussing on the same messages that put the onus of safety solely on the road user. No one made any commitments to designing safer streets or improving road infrastructure.

Like every other #RoadSafetyWeek this year too we saw a variety of messages from govt. ministries, local bodies, & city traffic police, asking pedestrians to walk on right side of the road, cyclists & 2 wheelers to wear helmets, & vehicle passengers to wear seatbelts.

The recent incident of speeding car killing 5 people on Bandra-Worli Sealink is a terrible tragedy. Every 1% increase in mean speed leads to a 4-5% increase in fatal risk.
