How can that be legal
-
There's no liability risk in republishing old news?
-
Not sure if that's an answer or an addendum to my question, but to add clarity, how can it be legal to change the dates and act like someone's publishing material through a source they're no longer employed by?
-
I'm curious as to the legality of this as well. Maybe it depends on who owns the copyright.

Sounds like similar tactics to buying Twitter followers to make it appear as if they're popular on Social, which it would appear they've been actively doing since the buyout...pic.twitter.com/7mpB2WX42k

Dotdash (formerly http://About.com ) has been doing the same thing to former writers for a while now. They've got a skeleton crew of writers and a bunch of freelance fluffers to game SEO by editing old content. My byline - maybe not my writing? Fun times.

Considering the climate, they should be asking permission and RT-ing WITHOUT changing the date. It's not fair to make it look like writers who have elected to cease contributing are still writing for them.
-
They didn't elect to cease contributing. They were fired.
-
I specifically mean the authors mentioned here who were freelancers. Obviously also horrible to do this to the people they fired.
-
Ah. Thanks for clarifying. This whole thing is gross. I hope the fail miserably.

Omg. Imagine how many writers would have jumped at the chance to write for them
-
Well, they don’t any longer, so I’m guessing not very many GOOD writers...

LA Weekly was sold to Semanal Media last month, a company that was formed explicitly to buy LA Weekly. It doesn't look like anyone knows who owns Semanal or where they're actually based

Yesterday I was asked to make a list of free holiday events, meals, etc homeless folks could take part in downtown. Sadly I began to realize most of the sites/papers that used to post info have stopped or closed. My list was 1/3rd as long this year versus the last 2.
-
Back when LAist was a thing and I worked there, I used to feature Laugh Factory for that! They do Thanksgiving and Christmas and anyone can come.
-
Thanks for doing that then and sharing this now. I'll pass it along.
