🙏 a big reason why we’ve shared our approach to product manager growth - hopefully more organisations can copy sherifmansour.medium.com/why-atlassian-

The default PM career ladder is: PM -> Sr. PM -> GPM -> Director -> VP But not everyone wants to move from building products to building orgs. Something that I learned from @shreyas's course is that there are many other paths to choose from if the above isn't for you.

Good cases for, but I continue to believe product owner role is not a job, but a role our engineer leaders play. The word “handoff” needs to be abolished in the #pmcraft and if we are building shared brains together - we don’t need this.

A short story to illustrate why having "Product Owners" sit between Product Managers & Engineers to write user stories, prioritize backlog, and help with delivery rarely makes sense:

💡 One of the reasons we’ve found people want this is the desire to do the activities they perceive are only possible if you manage people. 👉🏽 To help with this, we introduced an individual contributor track: sherifmansour.medium.com/why-atlassian-

Too many new PMs these days want to quickly get “promoted” to managing other PMs. In the vast majority of cases, this actually hurts your prospects and your long-term compensation because one can never fully develop the necessary core PM skills within 1-2 years of becoming a PM.

Incredibly proud of the amazing work the teams been doing to get Atlas into Beta. 👇🏽 👋🏽 Say goodbye to painful status meetings and trying to get everyone on the same project management tool. 🙌🏽 We want to help teams to be autonomous and work differently, together.

No, please you CAN get away from your backlog. I strongly believe that all product managers should strive to stay away from their backlogs! medium.com/atlassian-prod

😉 Amusing thread on being data-informed. We've experienced our fair share of data-driven mistakes at . I've shared some tips to help product teams be data-informed in 3 areas: 🎯 Setting goals 🔀 Deciding what next 🧪 Improving features 🎥 bit.ly/3BtBFtD

"what do we wall thing about being more data-informed?" AMAZING 1/n cool, so I'd like to replace my feature-focused roadmap with a list of experiments and a target input to impact "wait a sec..."

I've been an Engineering Manager for 6 years, at start-ups and big cos. One of the most important lessons I've learned as an EM is a key ingredient to managing well + propelling your growth that most people avoid: 💡Weekly Updates

👶 Lots good product lessons learnt which we will continue to share with the community. One I love to share is that our first version of this was literally one Confluence web page where people manually uploaded plugin files... that was it! Start small, have patience, iterate.

While I agree with the general intent of serving the team, please, PLEASE new PMs don’t assume half of this list is is the job of PM. Our craft needs better clarity around what a PM does, yes lots of misconceptions. bit.ly/3Iz8l8j But yes, serve your team where you can!
