So I see this whole story as a healthy reminder: We are in an unprecedented situation with and I applaud scientists for rushing to share information that is relevant for public health. We just have to remember that we have to be a bit more careful than usual.

I think we have to accept that in an outbreak situation where there is a rush to get information into the public, mistakes like this can happen. And I think it is the job of both scientists and journalists to correct those mistakes.

  4. If true this appears shockingly sloppy--scientists writing a paper focused on a "fact" they have not verified with a key source and that may drive policy, incite int'l panic and produce harm? Hard to imagine editors at a newspaper not asking "how do you know this?" didn't?

  5. Key difference in academic style vs journalism. "She had been well with no signs or symptoms of infection but had become ill on her flight back to China." Reporters would attribute "according to x," b/c "she couldn't be reached," so reader knows info not primary, less trustworthy

Social distancing tools that might be used to slow spread of are like Swiss cheese, exCDC director Julie Gerberding told . “Each individual slice has a lot of holes but if you stack up a number of them then you have a pretty good barrier.”

Tremendously important article by foretelling what may lie ahead for many hospitals and patients if the coronavirus circulates widely in local areas. Looks like flu pandemic planning scenarios. There is time to adapt them to mitigate & save lives

Check out my surprisingly calming conversation with Netflix's Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak executive producers Dr. Sheri Fink () and Dr. Ryan McGarry! They make a great show, and a great point.

What is certain is that countless individuals in public health and hospitals will perform admirably and selflessly if (and it is still if) the worst occurs. Also true: they would be greatly tested. To expand resources and minimize suffering, we will all need to be their partners.

There is no such thing as complete preparedness in our public health and medical systems, but there is much room to improve.

People have said the docuseries Pandemic came out at a perfect time, but in fact we made it because some of us had seen the system tested in smaller ways and knew its vulnerabilities. We hoped to inform before, not after, another dangerous pathogen emerged.

I cannot imagine many public health experts disagreeing, and many have been making this argument for years. It highlights the role we all have in following guidance and evidence, doing our part if a new virus becomes prevalent locally, because health workers can't do everything.

With quarantine in the news, resurfacing this 2015 story. Big differences between how Ebola and this coronavirus spread and therefore in the utility or not of quarantine, but a good reminder of the tremendous logistical demands of implementing one

The amount of knowledge that scientists are generating about and the sheer speed with which it is happening is truly remarkable. Everyone keeps praising the health care workers, and rightly so. But this also deserves a shoutout. One more case in point below:
