Donation boxes from Japan read, “岂曰无衣,与子同裳!”,“山川异域,风月同天。” Our language has been tainted by official gobbledygook; so we appreciate that Japan preserves the beauty of Chinese.

My name is on this story about the roots of China's viral crisis. But it's really the work of a great orchestra of journalists, especially our Chinese colleagues in the Beijing bureau: Elsie, Claire, Zoe, Amber, Yiwei and Albee. I thank them; you can too.

Really glad NYTimes told this story in greater details. With the trauma many Uygurs endure, it’s rare to read about the childhood, love and marriage, family struggles & the complicated relationship with Han and Uygur cultures of young liberal women like and

Mom said villagers manned a blockade outside of our home village in Zhejiang, only allowing cars/people from the village in. My family was able to get in to visit my great grandma's grave b/c their Hukous are still there and people know them, even though they came from the city.

The amounts of money at stake in this program make it ripe for graft, and people are not happy about having that exposed. But it’s important to note that Lieber and many other scientists in TT cases have been accused of fraud, NOT economic espionage/IP theft.

A Hunan peasant donated 15,000 medical face masks to local gov't. He'd worked at a face mask production facility, which was struggling financially. The factory couldn't make payroll when he left; he was instead given the face masks worth 20,000 yuan. Heartbreaking story.
