Working in infra there's nothing scarier than exposing a service with persistent storage. Not because durability is scary (though it is), but because of the strange chimeras that will be built around it because someone needed to put their state "somewhere".
Best place to store state is in memory. I keep telling new devs: you won't ever be disappointed if you store it in memory.
