Crime data for 2020 is complicated but @chesaboudin's failure shows best in burglary stats. You would expect burglaries to go down when people shelter at home, and that's indeed the case in places like Oakland (-43%) or San Jose (-3%). In SF, they've increased by 49%.

@SFPD reported that they see an increased number of burglaries when householders are at home. Criminals in SF became so brazen they no longer even try to not get caught. @SFDAOffice will release them anyway. cc @recallboudin

@michelletandler @EricaJSandberg @DionLimTV -- perhaps worth pointing out next time Chesa Boudin says "but crime is down!"

Some additional cities to compare: LA burglaries are down 14%. San Diego - down 16.2%. San Francisco is the only major city in California with a surge in burglaries this year. And that's despite being the city with most white-collar workers, who are working from home.

And if you want to say it's because of the pandemic, two points: 1) SF isn't alone in the pandemic 2) In other cities burglaries plummeted during the pandemic. In SF, they surged. SF is the only city in CA in which burglaries became more common during the pandemic.
