Let’s talk about ectopic pregnancies. A THREAD. Ohio’s Bill 182 would stop insurance companies from paying for abortion services, including any drug or device “used to prevent the implantation of a fertilized ovum.” That includes coverage of ectopic pregnancies. 1/n

State Rep. John Becker said doctors treating people for ectopic pregnancies would need to remove “that embryo from the fallopian tube and [reinsert] it in the uterus so that is defined as not an abortion under this bill.” 2/n

This is not a thing. Here’s how ectopic pregnancies work. Usually, a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. When a fertilized egg attaches itself anywhere but the uterus, it’s called an ectopic pregnancy. This happens often in the fallopian tube. 3/n

According to the American Pregnancy Association (and common sense), fallopian tubes are NOT suited to growing an embryo, and this situation requires treatment. This happens in 1 in 50 pregnancies. 4/n

Pregnant people feel symptoms like extreme pain, bleeding, or dizziness and fainting. They can be given medication that helps the body absorb the embryo and save the fallopian tube, but sometimes the tube becomes ruptured and has to be removed. This is an emergency surgery 5/n

Mayo Clinic says: “An ectopic pregnancy can’t proceed normally. The fertilized egg can’t survive, and the growing tissue may cause life-threatening bleeding, if left untreated.” 6/n

The concern here is to save the person from bleeding to death, and to try to repair the fallopian tube. NOT to "re-implant" the embryo to avoid defining a life-threatening situation as “abortion.” Again, this is not possible. @doctorjenn: "That is not medicine. That’s magic." 7/n

So many of the proposed bills regarding reproductive health reveal a deep lack of understanding of basic biology and people's bodies. And it's not like this information is a secret. I am not an expert in reproductive health, just a reporter with 10 minutes and Google. 8/8

In addition to being a glaring, gross & blatant, not to mention utterly ignorant, abridgment of a woman's right to access medical care this would also seem to be a restraint against trade issue.

I actually think this is the problem. This excuse that any restriction or any allowance is a slippery slope is nonsense imo. There are actually gray areas. I know this from personal experience.
