Just left Ukraine to Romania. Huge queues of 6+ hours in snow and wind, caused by Ukraine border checks.
On the Ro side: food, hot drinks, free buses, help, volunteers, arranging of rooms. Free travel on Ro trains.
Textbook case of a civilised and humane approach to refugees.

You mean, building a wall and throwing them in a cage isn’t the best way to handle it?

Every non-ukranian is treated the same. Some of them even remain at the border as volunteers. There was a nice young moroccan (hope i spelled it ok) guy that came from Ukraine and stayed to help, instead of going home.

Where did you cross the border? I have two Ukrainian professor friends who want to do the same - they were denied exit near Lyiv by Ukrainian border control although they got an invite from our university (as a replacment for card that grants exemption from military service)
Glad you got out. Sorry we won't have your excellent on the ground reporting, but damn glad you are out and safe. Thank you for staying as long as you could, Shaun.

Could you write something more about the Ukrainian border checks?
They seem to be aggravating a lot of people and result in declarations of racism and prejudice.
