@juliaioffe my question (and I don't have an answer) is do we want racists to stop being racist or just punished by the public for it? The latter is more satisfying but I wonder if it just makes them less overt rather than less racist.

A person should not be attacked in public for their beliefs regardless of stupidity. But that's not the case. People can and should be shamed and harrassed for their actions including threatening people at work because a language they doesn't understand makes them uncomfortable.
