Wow! My 9 year old daughter was set to learn about slavery in her school. On her own (having learned from my wife & I) she told her teacher that they should've learned all about Africa before they starting learning about slavery... AND HER TEACHER CHANGED THE CURRICULUM!
5. Begin Black history in the world by starting with 2018 and working your way backward. Start with Kendrick Lamar just winning the Pulitzer. Start w/ Beyonce @ Coachella. And then work your way back. But randomly starting in slavery says more about you then it does history
Yes! The way our curriculum presents history shapes the way students make meaning from it. So glad this convo happened and this was changed!
I respectfully disagree, Slavery is an important part of our history, we should not choose to rearrange and some how clean it up. We need to share how these atrocious acts has, no, is still take many generations to repair.

10th-grade teacher here. AP World History starts with the birth of humanity in Africa and follows black history through early empires to the present. Yes, slavery arises but only after the fact that humans have enslaved their neighbors throughout history has been clarified.

Just taught KL Pulitzer and Bey Coachella is my Music as Literature class. Mostly students of color excited to have a space to celebrate black art. I try to let them dictate curriculum as much as possible.

I would stay away from KL. Not a great role model, his lyrics are something children shouldn’t be listening to. For example the song ELEMENT.
