So, artists get a pass from moral behavior, but politicians don't? This is a personal choice, and you get to say how you handle your thoughts but not dictate to other people. In addition, celebs certainly ought to be Aware that people will idolize them.

When did he say politicians were exempt? He’s specifically talking about artists bc of the Kanye incident. Plus, he’s giving sound advise, he’s not dictating. Take it or leave it. And cut the whataboutism crap.

You’re right... but Beyonce

Clearly the rule doesn't apply to an actual goddess. Just mortals

This deserve endless retweets. People need to know the difference between the personality and the art itself.
-
Character trumps talent. Boycott + shun immoral artists + their works.

You never met Carrie Fisher, I guess. She was amazing.
-
Good to hear about Carrie. The exception doesn’t disprove the rule tho. Kill your heroes! Everybody is human and has a light and dark side, especially our idols for some reason

That can be said for anyone really. Nobody is perfect including activists.

Exodus 20:1-15 - And God spoke these words “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above

It can be difficult to separate the artist from the art. Sometimes I do it better than other times. Frankly, sometimes "who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you are saying" (Ralph Waldo Emerson) comes into play.

So true!!! When I was a kid I idolized a certain quarterback who shall remain anonymous. Later in life I set up memorabilia shows and we became friends...what a let down!! Hell of a FB player sometimes I question his morals

Thank U! For the love of everything real, why do we do this over & over? This looking for heroes. Perfect, beautiful, awesome, did I say perfect, people. They don't exist. Inevitably, the purity police expose folks, or they do as humans do: Live, make mistakes, & hopefully grow.

@Cat_Lance This is exactly what we were talking about when we were discussing authors whose work we appreciated but whose lifestyle we did not like. -
Sort of. I never put people up on a pedestal, it's just silly. But if someone is outed as a terrible human being, I don't continue to support them. That's, I think, the point of Mr. King's post. Just bc you like their work, don't pretend they are perfect.
-
I also don't get what you mean by lifestyle in this context? That word is dangerous to me. It brings to mind ppl who refer to being LGBTQAI as a "lifestyle."
-
Yes, I was searching for a better word. Simply, the guy seems like an angry, self absorbed lecher. But I still think his early story is one that we need to hear for understanding some Native American experience.
-
@Cat_Lance And now I assume you are irritated that I don’t know the correct term for Native American. That’s why I need you, to educate me! -
Using Native American is fine. First Nations is also fine. Indigenous is also acceptable. Specific tribal affiliations are best. In his case, Spokane and Coeur d'Alene
-
Which is to say, not at all. There's a difference between not knowing and asking, as you did, and wilful ignorance!
