KKK lynches black kid. Apologizes later. He was wrong. Admits racist. Woke now. Celebrate their progress? Not enough. As part of progress for someone that destroyed lives in the past is always to give something back to those lives they destroyed. New enlightenment is not enough

Hmm. I kinda thought he was talking about artists, not the klan. Pretty sure "woke" just suggests you got lazy politics in your closet, not sadistic murder, terror, torture or lynching.
-
Yeah I just exaggerated the example to simplify the principle to give something back. When we realize how much of an idiot we were, rather than celebrating woke shit, give something back to the community our ignorance once oppressed. Move forward by making that community stronger

I have SUCH a story of this very thing. I’m almost 44, grew up in PDX came from Hood River and was raised conservative baptist. I didn’t start asking and researching until I was 20. I didn’t arrive at my true beliefs and core values until 30ish. 1~
-
I still had biases to shed through my 30s. I e only been truly wide open and learning since the early oughts. I have been in social work professionally since ‘10.. I feel that I have an ability to research and spread the truth but don’t have a voice of my own.. 2~
-
Because I’m still learning. BUT. Because I felt at an early age such a conflict and began to see and learn, that I have a drive, a force, a passion to push others voices forward.. but I still don’t feel like I have a voice. Or a right. 3~
-
I am trying so hard. Educating myself and my kids and my friends.. I’ve lost so many connections over the last 3 years because I have become a conduit for what matters.. I often feel inadequate to speak out because I’m still learning. But baby I’m in it. Full on.

-
*lost connections bc I’ve been open & loud about what matters in this human experience. people have been offended & argued over immigrants/lgbtq/guns/politics/economytaxes...I am standing strong for these things. Some losses have been hard, I don’t care. I’m here for this.

it's sad that some people rather hate on someones growth instead of celebrating their progress. Everyone has a past good and bad It's a great sign of maturity when you can learn from your pastpic.twitter.com/U5liFjFS8o

I'm here for people who sincerely come to discover ways in which they were wrong and wish to do better. I'm not here for people who "evolve" once polling says it's safe to do the right thing.

When you are raised with your white privilege and no one points it out. It takes time in the real world to notice that something ain't right. Some of us notice right away. Some of us take too long & hurt ppl on the way. Some ppl just can't see their privilege or don't care.

An instructor in my sophomore year told one of my classmates, "Don't get down on someone who was where you were a year ago."
