What I am about to share is one of the most egregious abuses of power in the criminal justice system I've ever heard of. Took me a few weeks to gather this information. I just couldn't believe it. I saw what I thought I saw. Here we go...
MY LATEST. Meet Kevin Smith. That's the last known picture of him as a free man back in 2010. 8 years ago he was arrested on a drug charge in New Orleans. AND HE WAS NEVER CONVICTED. He's been in jail that whole time. I was wrong.
Having been jailed for 7 straight years without ever being convicted, a judge dismissed his case, and ordered him set free. To my surprise, it never happened. Kevin's still in jail RIGHT NOW. What I am about to tell you is as egregious an offense as anything you'll ever hear.
The State of Louisiana, having jailed Kevin Smith now for 8 years without ever convicting him of a crime, now says they are going to jail him to 2022 for not changing his mailing address properly 8 years ago. He's a for-profit prison. The owners are filthy rich.

That Advocate article indicates Martin Regan is (or was) Mr. Smith's attorney. It sounds like a shocking case, but Regan is generally thought of as one of our best defense lawyers in the city. I wonder if @ShaunKing has reached out to Mr. Regan.

I hesitate to backseat lawyer -- I would want to know what Mr. Regan says about it. I'm also not sure what @ShaunKing means when he says "jailed for failing to change his address." There are many "Kevin Smith"s in our publicly available data base down here. What "folder number"?

Thanks for sharing this. I can tell you that probation and parole violations are a real and constant issue for people accused of crimes in Louisiana. Once you are on probation or parole, you are often at the mercy of the government until the P&P period is over.
How can he be on probation or parole if he's not been to trial?

Ending slavery took the lives of over 600,000 Americans during the civil war over a few years. His "point" ignores the fact that many slaves resisted, often violently, but without an army backing them up, their victories were limited and took massive tolls.
The fact that momentum was required before there was success doesn't mean that people chose to remain there. It means that they lived with constant reminders what happens if they try and fail.
His point is just victim blaming.
