Is this why the families never look prepared to deal with media, usually the cops get off and the family gets paid pennies for the loss? If so sounds like it's time for attorneys dedicated to the cause to organize and publicize a movement on behalf of potentially disenfranchised.

Agreed. They run litigation factories. Push them through, take the cut, push them out. Issues are addressed only in as much as they can efficiently pull profits.

There ought to be a foundation to support the families and give them time to make good decisions while the settlements are negotiated. Oprah? Barry? Anyone?

Is there a nonprofit that works in this area? If not, maybe start one...prescreen solid local attorneys who volunteer pro bono or reduced rate work for those families? Keep the central org’s costs low, be a central info repository. It could also certify fundraising legitimacy.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people trying to benefit on the backs of other people's tragedies. Its a whole industry. Media included.

So the question becomes, how do we educate the average person about not signing agreements with anybody after incidents?
