Barack Obama is a sacred cow to the majority of African Americans. Criticizing him (or Oprah or Beyonce) for almost anything comes w/ guaranteed blowback. It’s not generally advisable politically. I believe in the substance of Bernie’s criticism of the Democratic Party though.

Progressives, particularly white progressives, but progressives in general, value political positions, philosophy, platforms, and grassroots organizing above all else. For that reason, Obama stopped resonating w/ most progressives several years ago.

I think we must find a way to simultaneously honor Obama’s humanity & political achievements while simultaneously interrogating the fact that he built the current systems of deportation and drone warfare. I can respect him AND say the Democratic Party went to shit on his watch.

Barrack Obama was the first politician I ever saw anywhere who I genuinely believed without doubt was a good man trying to do good, the importance of that cannot be overstated.
-
he failed utterly and ignominiously to do good, choosing instead the path of least resistance/whatever the CIA asked for at every opportunity.
-
Then why has Trump spent over a year doing nothing but tear down all the good he did? Good done quietly and slowly and without self congratulation is the very essence of a good person.

I think there are legitimate concerns about some decisions Obama made, he did his best but some of the precedents he chose (or was forced into by circumstances) are dangerous for any democracy, it's reasonable to assess those, but that doesn't make the good he did less valuable.
-
If letting HRC talk him into destabilizing Libya, which led to open slave markets, 30,000 deaths, a European migration crisis and Brexit is doing his best, I'd hate to see Obama on a bad day.

The question of when a moral responsibility to act becomes an irresistible imperative is tricky and doesn't always play out well long term however a man who cares and acts to end suffering with the best intentions is preferable to one who chooses self interest over right.

now you're reduced to arguing lesser of two evils instead of morality. give uppic.twitter.com/JYojqwEX1K

And despite how “progressive” Bernie claims to be we will never feel a one hundredth of that way towards him. So he should go away

I think Shaun is on the money here, yet Bernies policies are more likely to help black communities than Obama. He needs to be more forceful talking about race, but has a long history of fighting for civil rights and is prob best man for 2020 president who has the following to win

Having a man with that much grace, intelligence, restraint (he never lost his cool amidst the most disturbing attacks) is what I miss every single day in the White House. And I blame us the people for not fighting hard enough to push Obama in the direction we wanted.
-
Obama told us to do exactly that....he also said that WE are the answer we seek. A lot of us were not listening with that 3rd ear or reading with the 3rd eye (like Joe Madison always tells us to do). It was so frustrating for us who got it!!
