Same thing in South Africa. In Johannesburg, the average can speak just about three languages too. I, personally, speak six. And that is absolutely normal.
In Egypt I’ve met street vendors who speak 4-5 languages. The average person I’ve met speaks at least 3 and can easily speak about complex political matters taking place all over the world. In the United States, they have a name for white children with these skills...geniuses.

My friend was a child soldier in Sudan, attended school for one year when he came to Australia at 18. He didn't speak English when he arrived so he barely understood what was happening at school. He speaks five languages, got a university education and raised two boys on his own.

I had a similar impression of Cuba. Everyone we spoke to was so well informed, they knew things about our goings on in the US that many Americans don’t even take an interest in.

In Portugal, it's mandatory for children to learn two foreign languages in middle school. When they start high school, i.e., around 14 years of age, they have already had at least five years of the first foreign language and three years of the second.

I once had a Bedouin child try to sell me a shirt in six different languages. I've also had Arabic speakers in the US almost burst into tears of joy when they learn I can say, like, 12 simple words in their language. Always makes me sad. And embarrassed.
