No human being that is addicted to drugs should ever be sent to prison, certainly not for years and years on end, for their drug addiction. In Black communities, addiction (and poverty) are fully criminalized & weaponized. Back then he needed treatment - not prison.

Agree 100 percent. Drug addiction is far more a medical issue then a criminal justice issue. In my opinion, the so called "war on drugs" is the biggest domestic policy failure in US history. I have been a police officer for over 20 years, so I have seen it from all angles..

I'm still amazed how they emphasize opioid addiction when they talk about the current drug crisis. So, crack is a decades-long criminal problem that received tougher sentences and heroin is a medical concern that begs for a healthcare solution? Got it.

Agreed. We have a severe mental health prob. Too many mentally ill ppl & those suffering w/ addiction are hidden & reduced to exploitation by private prisons. Gifts & talents are wasted because they are denied the appropriate treatment to be productive. All Ppl should be valued!

Fighting the same battle for my brother in McDonough, GA. Diagnosed with Bipolar and drug and alcohol addiction but can't get bail despite being recommended and assessed for in patient treatment until he serves a maximum of 90 days. He's on day 70...

I agree. I have a friend in prison because he had a drug problem. To support his addiction, he burglarized a couple of residential homes when no one was home. He’s been in prison for 16 years on a 50 years to life sentence and he is 56 years old.
