So the theory that Trump won these kinds of districts due to racism and then there's a 20 point swing well... what happened? There was 17 months of sensitivity training or something?

There's a ton of racism, but the opioid and foreclosure/economic crises were real and the unwillingness to address the suffering explains why Clinton lost. Trump's not doing any better, so the swing back happened. Still racism, which is why he's got a floor of support.
-
Clinton literally ran on expanding healthcare access and paying for opioid addiction treatment, along with addressing the root causes of the opioid epidemic.

There was a list of policy proposals on her campaign website specifically about addiction: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/addiction/ …

Obama won, twice. As bad as racism is here, that is not what elected Trump.

We'd have to see if it's the same voters - did more dems show up? Did it get younger? Any demo decrease? There's a lot of numbers to crunch before making a call on why it swung.

Racism was a factor. Sexism was a factor. Thirty years of targeted character assassination was a factor.

Consider the fact that Obama won districts like this. Racism is an inherent part of the fabric and Trump blew the dog whistle hard. But that alone does not explain his victory. People did not hear Clinton addressing their concerns. It did matter that she didn’t visit them.

***turnout differential*** Result here doesn't necessarily imply that anyone changed their vote. People responding to dog whistles relatively more hyped in '16, people furious at Trumpism way more hyped now

..when people downplay race in concern for one’s status. socialist
@BillFletcherJr says economics is seen through lens of race. what anti-racist doesn’t want to change people & win elections? We know campaigns fan these sentiments most. https://theintercept.com/2018/03/11/anti-muslim-activities-politics-terrorism-islamophobia/ …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. Guess all this proves is that predominantly white PA18 will vote for the guy endorsed by the KKK if they think it benefits them economically. Winning, I guess...

There is no longer Obama or Hillary to hate. Now it’s just a white guy against the Trump brand. Racism and sexism explain the swing quite easily
