Because people ignorantly believe that America is a Christian nation when the Constitution specifically states that all citizens have religious freedom.

That's because a person is supposed to come to Christianity, willingly. Without free choice, there is no choice. Yet still, this country was founded by Christians, mostly.
-
Founding fathers were not Christians.

For the last 200 years, what has predominately been the religion of most Americans?
-
From Wikipedia: "Of the 55 delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, 28 were Anglicans (in the Church of England; or Episcopalian, after the American Revolutionary War was won), 21 were Protestants, and two were Roman Catholics (D. Carroll, and Fitzsimons).[31]"

While watching the second debate in 2016, my then 7 year old daughter turned to me and said “That man isn’t right, he’s not very smart.”
-
She is a smart and perceptive kid. All the best to you both.

Thank you

Your son is beautiful
And, as a Pakistani-American Muslim, I love & celebrate ALL parts of my identity. I am proud of those nuances, my ancestors & heritage.
And, I recognize when the intent is to Otherize & when it is to embrace. Sending an embrace back to your son

My ex-gf taught me something as a white man. (For reference, she wasn’t talking TO me. I called her Deb) “Don’t call me African American, I’m not from Africa. Just call me black. I know what you mean” - is this just a Deb thing? Cc
@Toure -
It varies with the individual . Black or AA is okay with me. Some prefer one or the other. The term was coined to signify descendants of the enslaved brought to the U.S.

Started Muslim Civil Right unit in my 11th grade US History class today. We talked about this very topic. Students tied it back to the other groups we have studied already.

I feel like all "hyphenated Americans" like myself have wondered for a long time what the criteria are for becoming un-hyphenated.
