We should move the voting age to 16.

I agree with Mr King, attempting to approach this so abstractly takes the context away from the reality that they are already subject to political mechanisms, without their formal political agency
-
that’s true! and it sucks. but if that’s the logic, why 16 then? it applies to anyone under 18. whereas at 18 they’re legally independent adults and have (usually) finished high school/basic civics edu.
-
imo, as a baseline, emancipated minors should have full citizenship. but for 16 as a general case, I made some replies earlier in a diff sub-thread, but tl;dr they’re being targeted directly by policy that permanently &/or directly affects their liveshttps://twitter.com/brobuntu/status/971172587815411712?s=21 …

I could get behind this. Mandatory civil service, after free college. But 16yo vote... Not so much.

i think it’s worth factoring in to how we think about laws and policies that affect young people. but my overall point is that there needs to be a very compelling reason to lower it.
-
we lowered it to 18 in the 70s during Vietnam, because political decisions then were killing people of those age groups without their voice or representation;
-
if high schools are becoming war zones for the drug war & firearm debates it makes sense for the voices of those materially affected to be brought into the fold
