getting youth engaged in civics is a great idea, but i’m skeptical of lowering the voting age. the prefrontal cortex of the brain (which is involved in processing consequence and rational decision making) isn’t fully developed until age 25 or so.

Should we then raise the age of military service to 25? How about adult prison sentences?
-
I agree with Mr King, attempting to approach this so abstractly takes the context away from the reality that they are already subject to political mechanisms, without their formal political agency
-
that’s true! and it sucks. but if that’s the logic, why 16 then? it applies to anyone under 18. whereas at 18 they’re legally independent adults and have (usually) finished high school/basic civics edu.
-
imo, as a baseline, emancipated minors should have full citizenship. but for 16 as a general case, I made some replies earlier in a diff sub-thread, but tl;dr they’re being targeted directly by policy that permanently &/or directly affects their liveshttps://twitter.com/brobuntu/status/971172587815411712?s=21 …

That would guarantee a sweeping change immediately. Thus, it will never be allowed to happen.

Really says something when you need children to vote in order to get your policy implemented

Needing the youth vote, and thinking that they deserve a vote, are two different things. Your comment only magnifies the fact that you're scared of the youth vote, because young people in this country are less and less fooled by GOP propaganda.
-
You really want to talk about GOP propaganda while the left is actively pushing politics in every entertainment industry and outlets like AJ+, huff po, Vice, etc. are spreading propaganda like wild fires?
-
Please enlighten me to this propaganda of which you speak. Being biased and pushing propaganda are two different things. Propaganda is deliberate deception, for political gain. Only the right is pushing deception.

Have you ever watched late night tv?

and make Election Day a federal holiday.
-
Now this I agree with! A lot more people would be out there voting if it was a paid day off.
-
Here in WV, employers have to legally grant you a minimum number of hours off on Election days to vote. Is it not the same in other states? :(
-
Unfortunately not, also in most democratic countries it is a national holiday, and I believe a paid one too.
-
Just went through the (brutal) election in Italy— on a Sunday, and polls open until 11pm.
-
At least you have till 11pm. Every stated town is different, but most close between 7 or 8pm and open at 7am. 12 hours is not enough for the different shifts people work. I'd take a weekend over a Tuesday.
