Honest question - how much does it cost to do things and where does the money go? Does it cost actual money to run? Or is it costs associated? I see lots of politicians asking for money but never really talking about how it helps the cause.

Ballot access typically costs money. Hiring a campaign staff, printing materials, running a website, advertising — all that costs money. For a small grassroots candidate, a few hundred bucks can be make or break.
