That is terrifying. I can't imagine looking at life that way. We have faild these Americans.
Young black men in this country often aren't taught to dream, aren't taught to look past the age of 18. That's the effect of the school to prison pipeline, where incarceration or death are offered as the only options.

Reason why they're taught that way is because either the parents themselves never dreamed or gave up on their dreams altogether. Plus, the parents may have grew up in an environment where they felt there was no hope.

I've had young Black men tell that they were surprised to find themselves turning 22, 25, 26. And they were sad because they had not made plans beyond 18.
